As soon as the storm clouds roll out and the sun starts shining again – following a storm – homeowners might forget about the importance of exterior inspection. While not all storms are damaging, it doesn’t hurt to do a quick check. Especially if the storm had high winds, hail, or heavy rain. Roof damage isn’t always visible from the ground, but there are a few things you can look for when assessing your roof yourself.
Visible Damage
Different types of storms will leave different visible damage on your roof. If the storm had high winds you should look for missing shingles, curling shingles, peeling at the edges of the roof, or large pieces of debris on the roof. Even if the shingles held up well against the wind, debris thrown against it at high velocity can damage the roof similarly to hail.
If the storm included hail, look for cracks in the shingles and dents in the gutters.Since hail damage will often be more localized to where it impacted the roof, it’s harder to see the damage from the ground. This is why it’s so important to get an inspection done by a professional who can safely get on your roof and thoroughly inspect the entire area. Or better yet, schedule a drone inspection.
Water Damage
Typical homes have attics, insulations and crawl spaces between them and their roof and don’t immediately notice water damage. Not seeing water damages, doesn’t mean there isn’t any.
If a hole in the roof is big enough and there is heavy rain, then you might see moisture stains or a leaking roof. In this case you will need to act FAST. The longer you let it go on, the weaker the integrity of your roof becomes. It is important to get roof inspections and to also check out your attic once in a while in case of leaks.
Age Related Damage
If you notice discoloration before a storm such as dark streaks, or decay on your roof, then it’s probably time for a new roof. Those are signs of age and natural wear, which means the shingles will not hold up against future storms.
